MRSA and Essential Oils

I am putting this blog together because of my interest in helping people who are fighting MRSA (Methicillin or multidrug resistant Staphylococcus aureus). This antibiotic resistant staph virus is more and more commonly found in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, gyms, schools, hotels, dorms, military barracks, jails and more. Many experts have suggested that MRSA is a national epidemic growing out of control.

There is no doubt that MRSA is a serious problem. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that each year in the United States there are about 1.7 million nosocomial infections in hospitals and 99,000 associated deaths. the British National Audit Office estimated that the incidence of nosocomial infections in Europe ranges from 4% to 10% of all hospital admissions. In the United Kingdom, they further estimated in 2000 that nosocomial infections contributed to 5000 deaths each year at an annual cost of £1bn to the NHS.1

It is interesting to note that one of the reasons that hosptials have such a problem with MRSA is because of their widespread use of anti-bacterial whipes, disinfectant and hand gels. Hospital bacteria such as MRSA are becoming resistant to most disinfectants and antiseptics used in hospitals. Bacteria which survive attacks by biocides are becoming ultra resistant superbugs, like MRSA. Excessive handwashing also is said to spread MRSA, because it causes dry hands, which were twice as likely to be colonized by bacteria. 58% of healthcare workers are said to be colonized with MRSA.

Modern medicine had little to offer in the way of help for those fighting MRSA. Currently vancomyocin is used to treat MRSA. It is known as the antibiotic of last resort, because of its damaging and often irreversible side effects. Some strains of MRSA are now becoming resistant to vancomyocin, as well, leaving few other medical solutions.

The good news is that there are alternative and natural medicine options for dealing with this rapidly mutating bacteria. One of the best natural options for fighting MRSA is with essential oils.

Several studies have shown that essential oils can kill MRSA. In a December 2004 study, Dr. Peter Warn, a researcher at the University of Manchester England, told BBC reporters that he and his team had done research on essential oils and MRSA and they found that three essential oils that destroyed MRSA and E. coli bacteria within minutes of contact.2

You probably won’t hear about any of these essential oil studies at your doctor’s office. That’s because essential oils are naturally occurring, and drug companies aren’t interested in investing in further research on them. They can't patent a product or make a profit on something that is comon and found naturally, unless they can find a way to make a synthetic copy.

Conventional medical treatments, such as antibiotics, are made up of single compounds which MRSA very quickly becomes resistant to. Essential oils are made up of a complex mixture of chemical compounds which is why the ever-mutating “superbug” finds difficult to resist. These compounds are naturally occurring and are derived from the plants in which the essential oil is made. Because no two essential oils are alike, they are the perfect complex compound to combat a mutating infection.
